Betzdorf, 5 December 2024 – The Green Earth Program of Blue Horizon, owned by OHB Venture Capital, a subsidiary of OHB SE, aims at the large-scale sequestration of CO2 by using a patented mix of various microorganisms in deserted areas. Following a development phase that started 2019 including a first small-scale field test in Burkina Faso, a demonstration of the technology has been recently initiated in Morocco in partnership with Phycotek and the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic of Morocco as well as the Luxembourg Institute of Technology. The activity is covering the development of the production and treatment over three one ha sites distributed in the country as well as a comprehensive scientific analysis and the capture of necessary data for the certification process.
The project is funded by the Ministry of Economy of Luxembourg through its Research, Development and Innovation Funding as well as OHB Venture Capital at up to 2.5 million €. “This activity will allow to demonstrate that our patented mix can sequestrate CO2 in large quantities, improve the soil fertility and reduce the erosion risk”, says Jochen Harms, Managing Director of Blue Horizon. “In 2027 latest, we will be able to roll-out the operational program globally with the aim to cover 1 million km2 by 2050 and thus sequestrate 5-10 billion tons of CO2”.
