OHB Digital Connect develops sensor for detection of urban heat islands

Detailed heat maps help increase heat resilience of cities

Bremen, 10 September 2023 - OHB Digital Connect GmbH, a subsidiary of German space and technology group OHB SE, has developed a novel sensor for monitoring heat islands in urban areas, thus extending its urban analytics portfolio. The airborne sensor is called RAVEN (Remote Airborne Variable Emissivity and Temperature SeNsor) and can display the temperature differences occurring in cities in high resolution. For this purpose, the sensor records the long-wave infrared radiation (LWIR) emitted by objects in three spectral bands. The data collected can then be used to create detailed heat maps and monitor the health and irrigation needs of vegetation in urban areas.

Since conventional broadband LWIR cameras and satellite instruments cannot adequately represent the variety of surface types found in cities, RAVEN fills a gap in the available data material and can be used to evaluate the need for urban planning measures. Repeated data collection also enables an evaluation of the effectiveness of measures already implemented.

In a first flight campaign, RAVEN was recently successfully tested. In cooperation with various pilot users, including the cities involved in the CityCLIM project (Luxembourg, Thessaloniki, Valencia and Karlsruhe) as well as Essen and Bremen, further tests will be carried out in the coming weeks and months. The goal of the ongoing development of the sensor system is to provide a compact solution for autonomous use on multicopter or fixed-wing drones.
