Spectacular first images of the MTG-I 1 published

First image of the full Earth disc from the Meteosat Third Generation Imager-1 (MTG-I1). The first image reveals a level of detail about the weather over Europe and Africa not previously possible from 36 000 km above Earth. ©Eumetsat/ESA

4. Mai 2023. Breathtaking and stunning: The first images taken by Europe’s new weather satellite MTG-I 1 were revealed today by EUMETSAT. We are happy and proud that OHB technology allows such a spectacular view of our Earth – images are taken every ten minutes from 36.000 km in remarkable detail. We at OHB - our teams in Oberpfaffenhofen and Bremen celebrated the image release this morning. It was a short, emotional moment when our planet Earth arose in this high resolution on our screens and our project managers, Rupert Feckl and Ian Bennett, thanked their MTG teams.

Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) is one of the most complex and innovative satellite systems ever built. It will provide improved data for weather forecasting from geostationary orbit for the next two decades. MTG is an excellent example of European technological excellence and is based on the long-standing partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). Thales Alenia Space, the joint company between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), is leading the whole MTG industrial consortium and is prime contractor of the four MTG Imager satellites. OHB is responsible for all six satellite platforms of the overall MTG system and is also involved in the development of the payloads: the four units of the telescope assembly of the Flexible Combined Imager are being supplied by OHB System AG, as are the two IRS (Infrared Sounding) instruments of the two Sounder satellites. OHB is also the prime contractor for the upcoming MTG Sounder mission.
